Teaching with Debate

Description: Classroom debate can be an effective and engaging way to help students develop critical thinking skills and examine complex issues from multiple perspectives. In our increasingly polarized world, however, it is also a potentially fraught activity, and one that instructors are sometimes hesitant to facilitate. In this workshop we will engage in a debate about debate, exploring both the benefits and risks of deliberative activities and reviewing best practices to help instructors get the most out of classroom debates. No matter their discipline, participants will leave with a better understanding of the research behind debate-based learning and the beginnings of a debate-based activity to use in their own courses.
