Annette Pilkington received her B.A. and M.A. from the honors mathematics program at University College Dublin in the years 1984 and 1985 respectively. She took a position as Lecturer at University College Dublin for one year prior to attending Notre Dame Graduate School. She received her Ph. D. from the University of Notre Dame in 1991 under the direction of Professor Alex Hahn. Since then she has taught at Florida International University, St. Mary's College and the University of Notre Dame.
She has published articles in Number Theory and Representation Theory. She encourages students to approach mathematics with a spirit of inquiry and to develop their problem solving skills by solving challenging problems. She enjoys helping students explore how mathe-
matical tools introduced in the classroom can be applied to their own interests and to everyday life. To this end, she often adds laboratory components, worksheets and projects to her classes.
She particularly enjoys seeing students discover how the use of mathematics often brings clarity to complex situations. Annette is currently developing a course on Mathematics in Sport. In addition to teaching mathematics she also teaches Shotokan Karate and will teach a class for Recsports at Notre Dame in Spring 2011.
