Katherine Spiess, associate professor and assistant chair of the Department of Finance, holds a Ph.D. in Business Administration, majoring in Finance, from the University of Missouri at Columbia. She has published articles on the effects of security issuance on stock returns and owners’ wealth, and the impact of private securities litigation reform in journals such as the Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Banking and Finance, and Managerial and Decision Economics. She teaches a variety of corporate finance courses, including Corporate Financial Management, Advanced Corporate Finance, Mergers & Acquisitions, and Real Options Analysis. Whenever possible, she incorporates extensive project-based applications that require students to integrate and apply to a real-world setting the individual finance concepts learned in her classes. She is past recipient of a Kaneb Teaching Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching (2001) and the BP Amoco Foundation College of Business Administration Outstanding Teacher Award (1999).
