Stephen Fallon

Program of Liberal Studies and Department of English

Stephen M. Fallon, the Rev John J Cavanaugh, CSC, Professor of the Humanities, holds a joint appointment in the Program of Liberal Studies and the Department of English.

Steve is the author of Milton among the Philosophers: Poetry and Materialism in Seventeenth-Century England (Cornell 1991) and Milton’s Peculiar Grace: Self-Representation and Authority (Cornell, 2007). He co-edited The Complete Poetry and Essential Prose of John Milton with William Kerrigan and John Rumrich for Random House/Modern Library (2007).   Steve’s articles on Milton and early modern intellectual history have appeared in numerous journals and collections. In 2011 he was named Honored Scholar by the Milton Society of America, an award given for lifetime achievement in Milton scholarship.

Steve believes that the intellectual resources of the university should be shared beyond university walls.  In 1998, he co-founded with Professor Clark Power a series of seminars on literary and philosophical classics at the South Bend Center for the Homeless.  He has taught these seminars, which carry Notre Dame credit, for all but two semesters over the past fourteen years.

Also in 1998, Steve founded the Program of Liberal Studies Summer Symposia.  These annual weeklong gatherings attract Program graduates, spouses, and parents, as well as old and new friends of the Program, for discussions of a wide range of important texts and issues.  During a typical Symposium week, participants attend (at their demand!) eighteen to twenty 90-minutes sessions, exploring works of literature, philosophy, theology, and philosophy and history of science, as well as operas, symphonies, and chamber music.

Steve received the College of Arts and Letters’ Charles Sheedy Award for Teaching in 2001.  He received one of the first Kaneb Teaching Awards in 1999, and he received a Joyce Teaching Award in 2011.
