Debate in the Classroom

(Intended for Postdocs & Graduate Students)


Debates can be an effective and engaging way for students to analyze different concepts and to develop critical thinking and public speaking skills. In this workshop, we will discuss strategies for incorporating debate into class discussion and various formats classroom debates could take. We will also engage in example debates to demonstrate their application to multiple disciplines and subject matters.

Learning Goals:

After successfully completing this workshop you will be able to:

  • articulate why debate can be a useful teaching method.
  • identify different types of debates and strategies for using them in class discussions.
  • design your own debate for use in the classroom.
